Palm Pre & webOS @ CES – Webkit Powers the Browser

First post in quite a while!!!

So Palm was very kind to let a nerdy non-reporter into their meeting room today where they were showing off the Pre. It’s a cool machine with a cool UI reminiscent of the Palm OS mating the iPhone.

There are lots of other places with detailed coverage, but I was most interested to learn that the browser is based on Webkit (and a modern build at that). I think that’s a scoop for me as I haven’t seen that anywhere else.

I’ll post pix soon, but in the interim, check out the cool posts:

  • Ah, so that’s what you’re still doing in the US. :)

Good scoop! First I’ve heard of it being WebKit, very cool.

So will you buy one? How much is it worth to you? How much do you think it’ll be up here?

  • It was just launched today, so that’s why I’m happy at the scoop; I think it’s my first (and likely only) one!!

Palm’s CEO has said (perhaps jokingly) that it was worth more than the iPhone, and will charge accordingly. Interestingly, it would have to come out on Telus / Bell since it’s CDMA-based. Obviously Palm is working on a GSM version, but since it’s an iPhone competitor, I’d bet that they chose CDMA first for that reason. I just picked up the G1 (Android), and I do love the old Palm OS; if the user experience is similar, yessir!

  • Rob,

You mention that it’s a modern build of WebKit. Do you specifically what build it is? Did Palm mention whether they have plans to contribute code back to the WebKit trunk? Know if there are any specific enhancements that Palm has added in there WebKit version?

  • Mike, good questions all. I did ask them for specifics but that’s all they volunteered (a developer program is upcoming with all the details). When pressed, they indicated that it was a “very modern build”. I also asked about plugins (such as Flash), and they said no, the browser will not have them, at least at first.
