iPad 3G + USA = US Credit Card Only

Just a quick follow up for those who care, if you have an iPad with 3G and you want to use it in the US with an AT&T SIM, you will have a bit of a problem.

I happen to have an AT&T Micro SIM that came with the iPad, but I think those are easy to get. The problem is that in order to pay for a plan, you’ll need to enter your credit card information with a US billing address on the iPad itself. You cannot ask AT&T to add credit in any other way, it must be directly on the iPad.

I had thought of a few ways around this problem, but none seemed to work. You can only have a US billing address, that’s it. Just a heads up!

Found this out the hard way? Found an answer? Is this true in other countries?

  • I’ve heard that Canadian AMEX cards work.

I’ve also heard that you can buy certain US prepaid credit cards (e.g. at Target) and give them an arbitrary US address and use them, but they are relatively expensive.

I’m going to give AMEX a try in Buffalo, NY next month.

  • Hi Jim, thanks for the response. I had the same idea re: prepaid cards, but balked as that also requires a US billing address. I have an Amex and it did not work. Do let me know!! Best of luck!
